It was the sunniest and warmest of May days when my husband and I were walking our “grandtwins” down Foxy Poise Road. It was a short walk because there wasn’t enough shade to protect their young skin. We crossed the street to walk past a house that did have shade—lots of it. The owner was outside, and not being shy, I stopped to ask him if I could take a picture of his trees because THAT is a tree canopy! THAT is what we are trying to do with our Re-Tree the Park program.
As the homeowner graciously gave me permission to take pictures of his trees, he told me a story that was amazing. “The first few years we lived here, I couldn’t get paint to stay on my windows. I went to Hikes Point Paint, knowing they would know what to do, and I followed their instructions exactly, but still my paint peeled. It wasn’t until these trees grew that I could keep paint on my house. The sun was just too intense. I couldn’t even touch my steel door from the inside during the hottest months!” Here’s what a beautiful tree canopy looks like:
Now that is great shade! So cool and welcoming! Claude Meers is my personal tree hero this summer. He understands and has acted on the certainty that trees lower energy bills, provide inviting coolness and shade, absorb carbon dioxide, give us oxygen, and look magnificent. Let’s all be like Mr. Meers! If you want a new tree, you know the drill! Fill out the request below, and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org
